Kai Sai Wing Chun is a method that can be applied to all styles of Wing Chun regardless of lineage. If one is currently studying under a particular lineage, incorporating the Kai Sai method to their Wing Chun would not mean that one would need to abandon their current lineage or style. For someone that has never studied Wing Chun before, Kai Sai Wing Chun has a full curriculum that teaches both traditional and the Kai Sai method allowing the student to compare and understand the two.

Kai Sai Wing Chun has no boundaries, restrictions or rules. It is based on a set of principles that can be implemented into any style or lineage of Wing Chun if one choose to do so. Kai Sai Wing Chun is most easily explained as a method of fighting, applying the techniques of Wing Chun with the objective of finishing your opponent as easily and efficiently as possible. The techniques of Kai Sai Wing Chun are designed to be lethal. Traditional Wing Chun may also be lethal at times but is not designed solely for the purpose of lethal combat. Therefore one must be very careful when practicing Kai Sai Wing Chun with a partner.

If a martial artist who has trained in Kai Sai Wing Chun were to participate in a karate or kickboxing tournament for sport, he would not employ true, unadulterated Kai Sai Wing Chun in the ring. To do so would be impossible, for his life would not be on the line and the rules would not allow him to execute his techniques—the stakes in a tournament are merely pride and money.

Kai Sai Wing Chun is not just any Chinese lethal combat method of fighting, it is a very specific method. There are countless styles of Chinese martial arts intended for use in lethal combat. Only a few of these subscribe to the particular school of thought that typifies Kai Sai Wing Chun. Thus, Kai Sai Wing Chun refers to a method of lethal combat governed by a particular philosophy and set of principles. To know what Kai Sai Wing Chun is, one must know the underlying theory.

The cornerstone of Kai Sai Wing Chun is the study of energy. More specifically it is the science of energy use, and control. It seeks to generate power and to control oncoming force without depending on physical size or strength. The key to this goal is the mastery of one’s own energy and the manipulation of the adversary’s energy.

As a result of this emphasis, the central skills of Kai Sai Wing Chun do not deteriorate with age. While muscular strength and speed inevitably deteriorate, internal energy may be cultivated indefinitely. Thus, the Kai Sai Wing Chun practitioner may continue to grow in combative efficacy as he grows older. Many of the masters of Chinese boxing, in fact, are in their 60’s or 70’s. Despite their age, they are feared fighters. This is in stark contrast to most athletic activities, in which yesterday’s champions are today’s has-beens.
